Analysts look at a variety of factors to estimate supply over the coming crop year, such as planted acreage, expected yields, and residual inventory.

USDA reports. The USDA publishes a number of reports both before and throughout the new crop year. The Prospective Plantings report estimates planted acreage for corn and wheat in late March, based on farmer surveys. Beginning in August, the monthly Crop Production Report forecasts yield for most grains, based on actual
