The FINRA General Securities Representative Qualification Examination, also known as the Series 7, has a fearsome reputation for a reason: it is the securities industry’s biggest and broadest securities exam; test-takers get 3 hours and 45 minutes to answer 135 questions. As FINRA says, the Series 7 exam “is intended to safeguard the investing public by helping to ensure that General Securities Representatives are competent to perform their job.” FINRA, with the SEC looking over its shoulder, wants industry professionals to be, well, professional. They want registered representatives (the industry term for someone who passes the Series 7) to know their stuff and to behave in a legal and ethical manner—so customers are happy and regulators can go home at night and sleep.
